In this BEACON live chat interview, we will discuss the Myers & Lawyer publication on interpreter teaming as part of their continued dialogue focused on returning the interpreting profession back to a collective-centered practice and revolutionizing how we show up in the work as practitioner.

There has been a longstanding narrative within the profession that there is not enough information or training on “teaming”. However, we would argue that the issue is not solely one of training, but of how teaming itself has been conceptualized, taught, and practiced. Our aim is to shift the conversation by starting with a critical exploration of co-regulation, positioning it as a foundational aspect of interpreter teaming rather than a peripheral consideration. We believe that co-regulation is a foundational teaming competency and practice, as necessary as the “hard skills” that often are prioritized in professional development related to interpreter teaming. This reframes interpreter teaming as both a relational process and a professional practice. Learn about the science behind co-regulation and practical advice for how to implement it in all phases of the interpreting assignment lifecycle to elevate not just your experience working in and with teams, but also to radically improve access for those using interpreting services.

About Your Interviewees

Kenton Myers is a trilingual interpreter and owner of M&N Language Services, LLC, a full-service agency based out of Birmingham, Alabama. He is well known across the South for his leadership in the advancement of the interpretation and translation field. Kenton holds a B.A. in Spanish and in Psychology from Birmingham Southern College. He is a nationally certified Spanish interpreter, holding certifications from the National Board of Certification of Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) and the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI), and is Court Certified in the state of Alabama. He is also a RID Nationally Certified American Sign Language Interpreter (NIC) and a Qualified Mental Health Interpreter (QMHI).

Kenton serves as president of the Interpreters and Translators Association of Alabama (ITAA), an organization composed of professionals working in over 12 languages, working to promote the profession, provide community education, and support continuing education for those working in the fields of interpretation and translation. Recognizing the need for more qualified interpreters, he has co- authored a 40-hour English/Spanish language healthcare interpreter training program to prepare individuals for national certification. Committed to holistic wellness, Kenton is also a Licensed Massage Therapist, Hispanic Outreach Wellness Instructor, and an IronTribe fanatic. In November 2017, Kenton proudly became the Region II Representative for Mano a Mano, the only national organization of trilingual (Spanish-English-ASL) interpreters.

Gloshanda Lawyer, PhD is a community-based Disability + Language Justice practitioner/researcher. She does research, workshops, trainings, and consultations at the community, national and international levels. Her research focuses on issues of social justice, colonization, Deaf Education and Deaf Studies with emphasis on analyzing systems of power. She advocates for multilingualism for Deaf, DeafBlind, DeafDisabled and Hard of Hearing populations and for Reproductive Justice, Language Justice, and Disability Justice for Black and Disabled birthers in the United States and the Global South. She has been a PK-12 Deaf educator; early interventionist; an assistant professor of Deaf Education, Deaf Studies, Interpreter Education; and a multilingual/multimodal interpreter. Gloshanda is founder of COCOA Language, Advocacy and Consulting LLC and co-founder/co-researcher at Myers & Lawyer, a Black multilingual research firm that engages in research, consultation, training and resource development for BIPOC interpreters. Gloshanda is also a full spectrum birth doula and a death doula.
